Coastal States Organization

The Coastal States Organization (CSO) was established in 1970 to represent the coastal states, commonwealths and territories on legislative and policy issues relating to the sound management of coastal, Great Lakes and ocean resources. CSO represents the interests of the Governors from the thirty-five coastal states, commonwealths, and territories of the United States.

CSO Adopts Coastal Management Policy

October 17, 2011
At its 41st Annual Meeting in Kennebunkport, Maine, CSO Members unanimously adopted a Policy to Advance US Coastal Zone Management calling for Congress and the Administration to:
*Support Coastal Management Programs as Essential Mechanisms to Advance the Nation’s Coastal and Ocean Priorities
*Reauthorize and Reinvigorate the Coastal Zone Management Act
*Maintain Federal Consistency Review under the CZMA

CSO Adopts Climate Change Adaptation Policy

October 17, 2011
At its 41st Annual Meeting in Kennebunkport, Maine, CSO Members unanimously adopted a Policy to Support Coastal States and Territories to Adapt to Climate Change and Advance a Coordinated National Climate Adaptation Strategy which calls for Congress and the Administration to:
*Coordinate Federal Programs, Policies and Funding
*Recognize Critical Role of State Coastal Programs
*Adopt Integrated Approaches to Climate Adaptation
*Improve Scientific Understanding and Increase Access to Data and Technical Support

CSO Adopts 2012-2014 Strategic Plan

At its 41st Annual Meeting in Kennebunkport, Maine, CSO Members unanimously adopted CSO’s Strategic Priorities 2012 – 2014. In line with CSO’s mission to support the shared vision of the coastal states, commonwealths and territories for the protection, conservation, responsible use and sustainable economic development of the nation’s coastal, ocean and Great Lakes resources, CSO’s Plan lays out strategic goals and actions in Leadership and Integrity, Member Services, Governance and Management, and Funding.

CSO Hosts National Ocean Policy Roundtable

On October 28, CSO hosted and co-sponsored a National Ocean Policy Roundtable with Restore America’s Estuaries, The Coastal Society and Coastal Management journal. Representatives from CEQ, NOAA, and the ENGO community joined over 70 participants to discuss the newest developments with the National Ocean Policy and National Ocean Council. CSO Submits Amicus Brief to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals

On January 29, CSO Submitted an amicus curiae to the Ninth Circuit in support of the states of Washington and Oregon on the Oregon, et al. v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Nos. 09-70269, 09-70442, 09-70442, 09-70477, 09-70770).
